The State Department of Education, guided by an elected school board, is responsible for the education system for all of the Hawaiian Islands. Education is funded through state tax revenues. There are 17 public schools in West Hawaii, offering elementary, intermediate and high schools education programs.

In addition to public schools, there are a number of private and charter schools in West Hawaii communities.

For those seeking higher education, the University of Hawaii's main campus on the island of Hawaii is located in Hilo (East Hawaii), but there are higher education opportunities available in West Hawaii through the University's satellite campus in Kealakekua and through island-wide programs offered by Hawaii Community College.

A hospitality training institute has been established to support the extensive visitor industry population and the Business Technology Training Institute in Kailua-Kona offers opportunity for advancement in computer science, marketing and other business-related fields.
